City Guide to Glasgow

Last month, we were meant to be visiting our lovely friends in Glasgow. Unfortunately our plans had to change fairly last minute... But knowing we will arrange to meet up another time instead, and with a trip to "Dear Green Place" pencilled in for the summer, not too much harm has been done thankfully!

It did get me thinking though about this brilliant city which we last visited a few years ago, and some of my favourite sites, restaurants and cafés I’d love to see again. Yep, you guessed it... I decided to put together another of my city guides! 

R I V E R H I L L

These guys have two venues, and I can fully recommend both for different reasons. If you’re looking for an evening meal, the restaurant is superb - last time I ate there, I said it was one of the best meals I’d ever had, and I think that probably still stands. If you’re looking for a flat white and slab of cake instead, pay a visit to their cafe. You won’t be disappointed, I can assure you.

C I T Y  S I G H T S E E I N G   T O U R *

The easiest way to see the main sights of Glasgow - and the top deck is ideal if you can handle the Scottish weather! You can choose to stay put for an hour or so as you glide past the city’s attractions, or hop on and off as needed. Plus the voice of Neil Oliver on the recorded commentary is very relaxing and comforting...

M A C K I N T O S H  A T  T H E  W I L L O W

These gorgeous tea rooms initially opened in 1903, having been designed by the famous Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Whether you’re a fan of art, or more importantly a fan of scones, it’s well worth paying a visit for the scrumptious afternoon tea. You can add gin, whisky, Prosecco or champagne to your finger sandwiches if the mood takes you.

T H E  P O T  S T I L L

One of the most famous whisky bars in Scotland, and for good reason. The barmen are on hand to help you choose from the 600 whiskies on offer. Once you’ve made your decision, pull up a stool and have a chat with the raucous yet lovely and welcoming locals.

I babbled about how great this little place is here, and I’m itching to go back soon. The street food is delicious, different, and caters for gluten-free and vegan diners too.

A beautiful, glamorous bar which is a must-visit for all gin lovers. The interiors are just gorgeous. And the gins are pretty good too!

N E C R O P O L I S

One of my favourite things in Glasgow! This hauntingly beautiful graveyard is filled to the brim with magnificent obelisks, mausoleums and gravestones, erected by the wealthiest Glaswegians in years gone by. Some of the locals I spoke to seemed surprised I wanted to make a special trip to a graveyard, but this eerie, ethereal place is a lot more than that. Don’t visit in the dark though, unless you’re in the mood to be terrified.

What city guide to Glasgow would be complete without mentioning this beauty? It’s one of the most visited museums in the UK outside of London, and with this much to look at, I’m not surprised. Another must-visit.

If you’re looking for brunch spots, this should be on your go-to list. The rows of freshly baked loaves which greet you as you walk in is a beautiful sight, and the delicious coffee goes down a treat.
